Amoureux de la belle voix de baryton du Canadien Gerald Finley et de sa belle approche des Lieder, n'hésitez pas. Les chants qui font le coeur de ce très bel enregistrement, les 7 "songs" du recueil "in the stream of life", à l'origine écrits pour voix et piano ont été musicalement arrangés par son ami le compositeur Einojuhani Rautavaara, pour sa voix. C'est leur collaboration qui a permis la sortie de cet enregistrement très original, très nordique et tout à fait passionnant.
Le CD propose beaucoup d'autres morceaux du compositeur Finlandais Jean Sibelius, qui subit l'influence des deux oeuvres qui le passionnaient "Tristan et Isolde" et "Parsifal" avant de se tourner vers bien d'autres références comme Debussy ou Schonberg et proposer sa propre matière musicale, très riche et très personnelle, qui vous transporte assez facilement au pays des multiples légendes nordiques dont elle s'inspire.
Le Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra la sert magnifiquement et le chef Edward Gardner sait entourer son chanteur d'un jeu musical toujours efficace. On frissonne souvent, on est transporté, c'est superbe et souvent peu connu.
Le CD s'ouvre sur le beau poème symphonique purement orchestral "Pohjola's daughter" qui vous met dans l'ambiance de Sibelius d'entrée de jeu.
Deux autres morceaux orchestraux sont proposés : le très inspiré "Romance for Strings in C major" et l'étrange et envoûtant "Oceanides". mais "envoûtant" est un terme qui convient bien, d'une manière générale, à cette belle orchestration Sibelienne, qui fait la part belle aux cordes et à leur dialogue.
Outre les "songs" de "in the stream of life", Gérald Finley nous propose sa belle et sombre voix au service de bien d'autres chants graves (Hymn to Thais, the unforgettable) ou plus "schubertiens" comme "The diamond on the March snow".
